To DBS-KAT users:
Several user letters have conveyed an interest in or concern about the
integrity of their DBS-KAT database. The database manager used by DBS-
KAT is DB_VISTAtm by RAIMA Corporation, Bellevue, Washington. It is a
very solid database manager and the current release used by Applied
Foresight is 2.21. There are no known bugs with this release. Under
very rare circumstances, a prior version (2.11 used in DBS-KAT 2.0
through 2.10), could theoretically cause a problem. No known problems
with DBS-KAT users were ever known to occur however.
Something to be aware of, however, is a documentation shortcoming in
older DBS-KAT's manuals. One should not run the DBS-KAT integrity
check routine in the KATLOOK or KAT -D (two ways to accomplish the
same thing), without first cataloging a diskette (or removeable
cartridge). Performing this routine on an uncataloged database
results in the message: "db_VISTA database error -19 - record not
legal member of set. d_setmr failed in c_dirline for CTRL01. DB
status = -19." The database is okay. It just needs at least one
volume cataloged first.
[Note: if one get this message after cataloging one volume, check if
the database was installed in two places on the computer (eg, in \ and
\KAT). Perhaps the cataloged volume was added to the database in one
directory and the analysis was done on the database in the other
directory. With the current release of DBS-KAT, the author has not
been able to generate the -19 error message except on a database with
no cataloged volumes.]
There was a rare occurring bug in versions prior to 2.11 of DB-VISTA
and users of DBS-KAT before release 2.0 are advised to follow the
advise given in the release 2.0 DBS-KAT Technical Manual. (It is okay
to update from a pre-2.0 version to 2.20 and bypass 2.10 of DBS-KAT.)
If you used DBS-KAT prior to release 2.0, did you follow those
instructions explicitly? This document stated that you were basically
given two routes to go to update your database: (1) purchase for $6.50
the DB_VISTA database utilities (DBCHECK and KEYBUILD) and follow
Applied Foresight's instructions for upgrading to 2.0 (or greater of)
DBS-KAT or (2) install release 2.0 (or greater of) of DBS-KAT and
rebuild from scratch a new DBS-KAT data base. Use the DBS-KAT order Use the DBS-KAT order _____________________
